Dr. Schultze serves as Director of Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at the Albany Medical College Department of Ophthalmology, Medical Director of the Albany Lions Eye Bank, as well as TLC LASIK Albany center. He is a board-certified, fellowship-trained cornea specialist maintaining full-time tertiary referral practice with an emphasis on medical and surgical eye diseases including LASIK, cornea transplant, and cataract surgery. Dr. Schultze has been selected as one of only 50 U.S. surgeons to serve as a VISX and Intralase Trainer (proctors other surgeons in the use of the laser) and was the first area surgeon to perform Custom LASIK and blade-free LASIK. He has performed over 20,000 successful laser refractive procedures and his refractive experience dates back to 1998 when he was one of the first fellows in the country to obtain training in the field and actually perform laser refractive surgery. As upstate New York’s most qualified laser refractive surgeon, Dr. Schultze’s continued focus lies in paying meticulous attention to detail in order to maximize visual outcomes while maintaining a strong rapport with his patients.
Education & Training
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Schultze received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1994 where he was distinguished with the Lamport Biomedical Research Award. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Schultze furthered his education with specialty fellowship training in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the Albany Medical College. He now serves as Program Director of the Albany Medical College Ophthalmology Residency Program, Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellowship Program, and Director of Medical Student Ophthalmology Education.
Accomplishments & Honors
Dr. Schultze is an expert in the latest revolutionary techniques in corneal and refractive surgery and has been featured on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX television. He has been invited to participate in several national multi-center studies including an FDA-monitored trial for excimer laser correction of farsightedness and astigmatism. Numerous residents, fellows, and established regional surgeons have come to observe him operate and share his expertise. In addition, Dr. Schultze serves the American Board of Ophthalmology as a Special Examiner working to help administer the board certification exam designed to test the competency of all new ophthalmologists. He serves the American Academy of Ophthalmology on both the Program and Eye Bank Committees. Dr. Schultze regularly presents his research at national meetings and has also traveled around the world to deliver lectures, share his ideas with others, and stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.
