Dr. George Tate, Regional Medical Director at TLC Charleston, was the first surgeon to do refractive surgery in the Carolinas. He studied keratomileusis (the procedure that later evolved into LASIK) in 1981 with Dr. Jose Ignacio Barraquer, the inventor of the technique. Dr. Tate has performed more than 20,000 LASIK procedures, and is proud to offer Custom Wavefront LASIK and IntraLase technology.
Education/Training
Dr. Tate received a MA in Bio-Physics and Neurophysiology at the University of Texas and his medical degree from Texas Southwestern Medical School. He was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Southwestern before coming to the Carolinas. He was also clinical instructor at Tulane Ophthalmology Department from 1995-1999. In addition, Dr. Tate was a flight surgeon in the United States Army and has been decorated with the National Defense Ribbon & Army Commendation Medal.

Dr. Tate is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Society for Excellence in Eye Care and many other local medical societies.
Honors/Accomplishments
Dr. Tate has received the VISX Star Award, placing Dr. Tate in the top 5% of refractive surgeons in the nation and was elected to Americas Top Ophthalmologists, 2002-03. He is an international lecturer and author of numerous works on ophthalmic surgery. He was also a principal investigator for the Chiron Technolas laser to perform PRK and LASIK under FDA mandated protocol.
